The proclamation of the independence is being considered on the basis of historical-legal events and a subsequent reaction of the international community. Firstly, the requisites of a statehood, based on the Montevideo Convention (1933) - citizens, territory, effective government and the ability to enter into international relationships - were considered. Especially their fulfilment in the moment of the proclamation of independence. Secondly an effect of a state recognition is considered, bearing in mind an existence of a declaratory and a constitutional theory of recognition. Those were then applied on the act of recognition of Croatia by other states. The process of creation of Croatia took place under difficult conditions, because of an armed conflict, which took place on Balkan at that time. Therefore, solving the problem of legal status of the successor states, which divided from the federation, was of a huge importance. Within a Conference for a peace in Yugoslavia a commission was established. So called Badinter Commission was meant to solve legal...

The presented diploma thesis deals with the ideas of Greater Serbia and Greater Croatia in the approaches of two significant discourse actors who had a major influence on the course of events during the disintegration of Yugoslavia, namely Slobodan Milošević and Franjo Tudjman. The aim of the thesis is to examine the elements of these "greater" ideas present in their speeches and how they managed to adapt these historical narratives to the environment of socialist Yugoslavia, or how they managed to transfer them into the public discourse at the time. This is achieved through historical discourse analysis, which made it possible to explore their influential speeches as well as the origin of the narratives and ideas related to the irredentist ideologies. The main period under examination is the years 1986-1991 when these narratives played a significant role in mobilising society around the "national question" and the political agenda of both actors. The thesis also includes a comparison of the conceptualization of ideas by Milošević and Tudjman, which helps to reveal the similarities in ideological principles on which these "greater" concepts were built. The thesis concludes that the strategies employed by both actors to popularize their ideas were relatively similar. To transfer these ideas into the...

A Common Legacy, Divergent Paths: Understanding the Transformation of Post-Yugoslav Welfare States
Jusić, Mirna ; Nekola, Martin (advisor) ; Pickering, Paula M. (referee) ; Wildmannová, Mirka (referee)
Four countries that had once been embedded in a common welfare state, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, have espoused different paths of institutional welfare transformation following Yugoslavia's dissolution. The author's PhD dissertation aims to understand the nature of the changes that have occurred in two welfare sectors (employment policy and family policy) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia, over the last two decades, by looking at changes in the characteristics of welfare programs and their implications on the capabilities of beneficiaries, as well as the levels of stratification they yield within these societies. Moreover, its other aim is to understand why such differences in welfare transformation came about. To that end, the dissertation applies Kingdon's Multiple Streams Framework (MSF) to identify important conditions that have contributed to streams converging and the opening of policy windows that resulted in agenda change.
